Vacature: System Network Engineer (@DACS)

DACS (the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences) part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering is growing fast. In September 2023, we successfully launched our bachelor in Computer Science and we now provide education to more than 1100 bachelor and master students in the field of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Science. And you understand that this type of education comes with the necessary hardware and network systems. We are currently in the process of setting up a completely new infrastructure and that is why we are looking for talented a System Network Engineer to join our department.

Job description:

In this role, you will be responsible for designing, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting our computer systems and networks and for providing technical support to ensure seamless operations. Building the systems environment with a combination of standard open source components, custom services, and bespoke integrations, you will be a linking pin between staff, students, and computing environment. You combine a hands-on ‘DevOps’ approach with an innate feeling for system operations the educational programme can rely on.

You will be working on:

  • Computer Systems and Networks:Design, configure, and maintain computer hardware, operating systems, applications, and network infrastructure.
  • Technical Support:Provide direct technical assistance to faculty, and staff, addressing hardware and software issues.
  • Troubleshooting and Diagnostics:Diagnose and resolve system and network problems, identifying and solving hardware or software faults, suggest structural improvements to systems and systems architecture, but also replacing parts as required.
  • Documentation and Training:Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations and provide training to end-users and staff as needed.
  • Technology Evaluation:Test and evaluate new technologies and provide recommendations for their potential implementation within the educational environment.

Requirements

  • Degree in computer science, or related discipline with strong computer network components.
  • 3 years of experience in computer systems and network engineering, technical support, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills in English (Dutch is a plus).

Additionally we would like it if you have

  • Strong knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems (preferably including at least Linux or a BSD variant), and networking technologies (TCP/IP, routing protocols, VLANs, wireless networking).
  • Familiarity with server systems, storage devices, backup solutions, and virtualization technologies.
  • Experience working in a self-directed or ‘DevOps’ environment, integrating software and hardware.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools (such as Ansible, SaltStack, Puppet, &c)
  • Scripting in multiple languages, systems programming, and automation are part of your standard toolbox.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to work under pressure and prioritize multiple tasks.

What we offer

As System Network Engineer at Faculty of Science & Engineering, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 10-11 according to UFO profile Education and Research Technician, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €3226,00 and €5929,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon proven suitability, the employment contract will be converted to an indefinite contract.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.
